Bacalar

Our local team in Mexico City let us know about this location and while we didn’t get to it during the month, it turned out to be a perfect stop on the way down to Belize.  We planned to fly into Chetumal and take the ferry to Caye Caulker, however due to timing in the season we had a day in between, and Bacalar was how we spent it.

The water in the lagoon comes from the nearby cenotes and combined with the shallowness and limestone bottom turns the lake into a colourful sight.  I’ve seen it described as the Maldives of Mexico – having been to the Maldives I can tell you it’s not, however it’s much more accessible and definitely worth the trip if you’re in the area.
